Registration for SLZ language modules
This page contains information about the registration process for SLZ language modules, as well as about the conditions of participation and mandatory placement tests. For specific inquiries, please consult our FAQ section. Should you have further questions afterwards, please feel free to contact the SLZ team using the following contact form.
Conditions of Participation
Due to the limited number of places, only officially enrolled students at the University of Bonn can register for the language modules offered by the Language Learning Center. This means that cross-registered students, guests, doctoral students and employees cannot participate in our language modules.
Curricular provisions
Each individual department is in charge of the admissions process of enrolled students. The language modules should be taken in accordance with the curricular specifications outlined by the respective departments. Depending on these specifications, the language modules can be taken as an elective (Freier Wahlbereich), a required elective (Wahlpflichtbereich), or as an interdisciplinary course (Überfachlicher Praxisbereich).
Taking Multiple Modules
Once you have successfully completed a language module, you cannot take it again and cannot attend a language module of the same language offered at a lower language level.
Each semester, you can only register for one language module at level A.
Language Level Assessment
The basic prerequisite for our language modules is that attendees possess the requisite language level. In order to register for all language modules from level A1.2 onwards, interested students must therefore complete a language level assessment (explained below). These assessments enable the SLZ team to create learning groups with comparable language skills, ensuring that all students succeed together.
The results of the placement test are binding — please do not register for a module at a different level than your placement test indicates. Teachers verify the accuracy of placement tests during the initial sessions of each module.
Rules and Procedures for Language Level Assessment
These modules are offered to students with prior knowledge.
Please contact the SLZ team before registering. To do this, please use the following contact form.
These modules are offered to students with prior knowledge.
Interested students must complete a language level assessment via eCampus prior to registration.
The results of the placement test determine which language modules students may register for. Registrations for language modules that do not correspond to the results of the assessment will not be considered.
The placement test is valid for a maximum of two semesters.
Language level assessments are not mandatory for students in the following categories:
- Students without prior language proficiency, or with a language level below A1 (language modules at levels A1 and A1.1)
- Applicants who have already successfully passed the previous module in the respective language, including the final exam at the SLZ.
In this case, students are automatically placed at the language level immediately following the module they completed; e.g. after completing the B1 module, students would be eligible to take the B2.1 module of the same language (but not B2.2). - Applicants who have acquired international language certificates (e.g. Cambridge, DELF or DELE) or UNIcert certificates (language attestations from language schools or adult education institutes do not count).
As long as the exam was taken within the preceding two years, the certificate will be recognized as proof of a student’s language proficiency. For it to be recognized, please send a complete scan of your certificate, as well as an indication of which module you would like to take, to the Student Helpdesk via the following contact form.
Shortly before the registration period begins, the placement test will be activated on eCampus, and will remain open until the registration deadline.

Registration and Admission
Registration for language modules and their corresponding exams is only possible through the electronic course catalog on BASIS during the registration phases.
If you encounter any problems during registration, please contact us during the registration phase via the following contact form.
Step-by-step guide to registration:
- Log in to BASIS with your Uni-ID.
- Select Features on the gray bar in the upper left corner.
- Navigate to the sidebar and click Register/Cancel Events.
- Select your course of study and navigate to the SLZ language modules. You will usually find these under categories such as interdisciplinary courses, elective courses, required elective courses (Überfachlicher Praxisbereich, Optionalbereich, Wahlpflichtbereich, etc.).
- Search for the language module of your choice and click on the door symbol with a green arrow to the right of it.

Note: Please be aware that registration via BASIS does not guarantee admission. Course places will be randomly allocated at the end of the registration period.
Admission and first lesson
If you are admitted to a module, you will receive an email addressed to your Uni-Bonn email address shortly before the start of the semester including a formal notice of your admission and further instructions about the first session.
Please bring the certificate of your placement test to the first lesson.
If you are admitted to a module, but are unable to attend the first lesson, please let us know at least 24 hours before the lesson using the following contact form. Each module has a waiting list, and accepted students who cannot attend the first session must inform us in order to not lose their position. Students on the waiting list who are invited to attend the first lesson are not automatically entitled to a spot in the module.
Attending a module without prior registration via BASIS is not possible.
Note: Please use and frequently check your Uni-Bonn email address, as this is the only form of communication used between teachers and students during the semester.
Exam registration
Students can only register for language module exams via BASIS during the registration phases.
Please also read through the information in the exam registration guide (available for download as a PDF).
